What's Going on at Ashley Creek Farm?

Ashley Creek Cows Follow this link to see a tribute to our Ashley Creek cows.

Our intent on this page is to post photographs of what is currently going on at Ashley Creek Farm, whether we are planting or mulching, harvesting or just plain letting the garlic do its thing.

Field Manager Bob preps the soil in the fall.

Our garlic is planted by hand - it is hard, back-breaking work!

Mulching ensures fewer weeds and protection from harsh weather.

April:  It's springtime at Ashley Creek with much to do. It's that time of year where the fruit trees tell us when to start working.

After manure is spread on the field, Field Manager Bob is on one of his tractors and rolling all day long.

He puts his tractor in low, low gear and takes off to a cruising speed of .45 mph. One minute he's there...

...the next minute he's gone.

We think he changes gears mid-stream.

May:  Lots of pumpkins have been planted, but there are still more to plant!  We'll have a beautiful crop this year, so plan on coming to the farm for your Fall decorations!  We've started planting corn, too.  We like to stagger the corn planting so that we'll have corn for more than just 2 weeks. We're looking forward to some tasty ears this fall!

A round of weeding has been completed and it's almost time to start all over again.

There's a new farm worker in town, and he doesn't miss a weed.  If he's not happy.... nobody is happy.

Inspections are conducted on a regular basis.

Before weeding.

After weeding.

Weeding makes a big difference!

Inspecting the fields can be a full time job.

June 2009:  The garlic is growing healthy and full of foilage.

We put on just the right amount of manure on the crops in the Fall. The garlic looks like it doesn't need an extra boost of bone meal.

Beautiful, green garlic!

The curly tops are cut in the Spring and used the same way you would use green onions.  MMMMMMMM Good!

Do you ever wonder why it takes us so long to harvest and process? Don't wonder any longer. There is a new supervisor in town and she runs a tight ship!

In addition to this, we have some new technology to keep track of what's happening on the farm.

July 2009:  It's harvest time. As soon as we pick the garlic, we tie it up and immediately hang it under the roof in all of our barns.

Sometimes this work can be very exhausting!
